    GEO citations are the new rankings

    Why one mention inside an AI answer is worth more than a top-10 organic position in 2026.

    What changed in the last 18 months

    ChatGPT crossed 250 million weekly users in late 2024. Perplexity passed 30 million monthly users. Google AI Overviews now appear on a majority of high-intent commercial queries in the U.S. The cumulative effect: a buyer who would have once typed 'best plumber in Salt Lake City' into Google and clicked one of ten links now gets a synthesized answer with three to seven cited sources — and the cited brands win the trust, the visibility, and a meaningful share of downstream revenue.

    For a U.S. service business, the unit of measurement has shifted from 'rank #3 on the SERP' to 'be cited inside the answer'. Both still matter; AI citation is the one that compounds fastest.

    The four pages we always harden first

    If you do nothing else this quarter, audit and rewrite these four pages with the direct-answer block on top, sourced facts in the middle, FAQ at the bottom pattern: home, services overview, the single service that drives the most revenue, and the contact page.

    Each page should open with a 40–60 word direct answer to its title question, then immediately back it up with one quoted statistic, one expert quote (yours, with title), one ranked list or comparison, one FAQ block, and a sources-cited list. That structure is what an LLM lifts when it builds a citation-eligible summary.
